What makes a ducted heating job different?
Ducted heating moves warmed air through a network of ducts and vents. The heating appliance, controller, return-air grille, ducts and room outlets may be in different places. A report of 'no heat' alone does not tell the tradesperson whether there is a controller issue, an airflow problem or an appliance fault.
Tell the gasfitter whether the issue affects every outlet or only some rooms, where the heater is installed (for example outdoors or in a roof space) and whether the access route is clear. Never enter an unsafe roof space to check it.
A quick description guide, not a DIY diagnosis
- Air blows but stays cold: tell the gasfitter whether the controller requests heat and whether an error code appears
- One room is noticeably colder: identify the affected outlets and any recent building or ductwork changes
- Airflow is weak throughout: say when it started and whether the return-air grille is visibly obstructed
- Heater turns off repeatedly: record approximately how long it runs and any controller message
- Any gas smell, soot, scorching or possible carbon monoxide symptoms: stop using it and follow emergency advice rather than trying to reset or dismantle it
What should a ducted gas heater service include?
Energy Safe Victoria and the Building and Plumbing Commission recommend servicing gas space heaters and central heaters at least every two years by a qualified gasfitter. The professional should check safety-critical components, ventilation and flue condition, and use a carbon monoxide analyser to test for spillage.
Discuss the air filter, fan and airflow as part of the service scope. Ask whether the price covers access, cleaning or replacing any filters where required, inspection of the duct system, safety testing and a written service record. A full duct replacement is a separate job, not an assumed part of a gas-appliance service.
Choosing the right tradesperson
Ask for the name and Building and Plumbing Commission credentials of the person attending, including the Type A gas-appliance servicing endorsement relevant to the work. Confirm that the person is equipped and trained to test for carbon monoxide spillage.
If electrical wiring or a new reverse-cycle system is involved, other trade qualifications may be needed; the gasfitter can explain whether an additional electrician or refrigerant-handling licensed installer is required. See licence checks and air conditioning.
How to compare service and repair quotes
Separate routine maintenance from fault diagnosis. Request a written scope that states the call-out, gas-appliance safety testing, access fees, consumables or filters, parts, after-hours charges and whether the service report is included.
Ask what happens if the heater needs a part that is no longer available. If replacement is recommended, ask for at least one alternative with installation and any electrical work priced separately. For a structured comparison, use the quote comparison worksheet. Avoid treating any advertised starting price as a total quote.
Rental properties and planned replacement
A supplied heater that fails can require an urgent rental repair in Victoria. Rental providers are also required to arrange gas safety checks every two years; that requirement covers existing rentals from 13 October 2026. Renters can request the last gas safety-check record in writing.
Victorian energy-efficiency standards from March 2027 can affect the replacement of an irreparable fixed heater. Do not assume a like-for-like new gas ducted unit is the required replacement: check the applicable date, property and exemptions in the rental energy standards guide.
If there is a gas smell or possible carbon monoxide leak
Do not continue operating the heater. For a gas smell, Energy Safe Victoria says to turn off gas only if safe, avoid electrical switches and ignition sources, ventilate and move people away, then contact the emergency number on the gas bill. For suspected carbon monoxide exposure, leave for fresh air and seek medical help; call 000 for severe symptoms or immediate danger.
Repairs to the gas appliance, flue or burner are not DIY work. A homeowner's observation of a dirty external grille is not a substitute for a professional safety service.
Example brief for a ducted heating quote
"Ducted gas central heating at a double-storey home in Oakleigh. Unit is located outdoors; the return-air grille is in the hall. Airflow is weaker in two bedrooms, but the other outlets are warm. Controller and unit model photos available. Please quote Type A safety servicing and diagnosis, with filters, testing and repairs shown as separate items."
Change the example to match your real observations and avoid guessing the cause.
Before you request a quote
- Write down whether all rooms or only some rooms have the problem
- Have controller errors, brand, model, last service date and unit access details ready
- Check the attending practitioner's Type A gas-servicing authorisation
- Confirm carbon monoxide testing and a written service report
- Request itemised prices for diagnosis, service, filters, parts and replacement options
Have the details ready? Prepare a plumbing and gasfitting job request, or use the job-brief builder. This guide does not confirm a tradesperson's availability; check credentials before booking.
