Common jobs for a brickie
Repairing damaged bricks, repointing weathered mortar, building a garden wall or laying new brickwork can involve bricklayers. A chimney, retaining wall or wall showing spreading cracks may require a structural assessment and other qualified practitioners.
Describe movement, cracking and moisture
Note where cracks occur, whether they appear to be growing and any visible moisture or leaning. Photos showing the wider wall are often more informative than a close-up alone. Do not remove unstable masonry yourself.
Compare a complete quote
Ask about matching brick colours, mortar type, access and scaffolding, waste removal, weather exposure, sealing and protection of nearby surfaces. For new work, clarify foundations, engineering, drainage and relevant permissions.
What can be urgent?
Loose masonry posing a safety hazard needs assessment and isolation of the area, not an assumed same-day rebuild. A minor cosmetic repair can usually be scheduled once materials and access are organised.
Example brief
“Exterior garden wall has several cracked bricks near a corner. Wall is approximately 1.2 metres high and no building work has been approved yet. Please assess stability, matching materials, access, disposal and whether engineering or council approval is required.”
